Here, you can find answers to commonly asked QuickXChange Questions. If your question is not answered here, please feel free to PM the QuickXChange account.
EDIT 2/12/08: Added some information concerning emergency lates and pulling out of sign-ups.
EDIT 2/18/08: Answered a common question about acceptable media types. Also added instructions for turning gifts in.
BasicsWhat is QuickXChange?QuickXChange is a private sketch exchange meant for people to engage in low-pressure art trades and meet friends of friends. Basically, it's like a Secret Sketchy Santa every two weeks.
Do I have to be a visual artist?Yes. However, we accept all styles of visual art.
If I am a member, do I have to watch this account?Yes. All information will be updated in journal entries.
RoundsWhat constitutes as a sketch? Most things in color, unless they are speedpaints, would be going overboard. I recommend spending between twenty minutes to two hours per piece, depending on your drawing speed. You are welcome to go overboard, but it is not necessary.
Do I have to use a specific media for this?Of course not. Pencil, digital, what have you. Whatever you feel produces good but quick work.
Do I have to use original characters for exchanges? No. You can use fanart, avatars, RPG characters, anything. All types of characters are allowed.
How often are rounds?A new round begins every other Sunday, 11:59 PM, EST. When you receive your devNote telling you who you are drawing for, you have until the Sunday after next to complete the piece. If you do not finish by then, it will be considered late. Please see below for the late policy.
If I am a member, how often do I have to participate?Whenever you want to. There are no tabs kept on activity. You can sign up for every exchange or sign up for none. It's your choice.
When are sign-ups?Sign-ups occur the round before they begin. For example, while Round 32 is running, people are allowed to sign up for Round 33 by commenting on the Round 32 journal. At 11:59 PM, Round 33 starts, no more people can sign up for it, and Round 34 sign-ups begin.
What are themed rounds?Odd rounds are theme-less, and even rounds are themed. In themed rounds, you take inspiration from a theme when you draw. For example, in a Wild West round, you could draw your person's character as a cowboy or a saloon girl.
What if I can no longer participate in a round and sign-ups are not over yet?Simply comment under the same journal entry where you signed up and say you'd like to withdraw. You don't even have to give a reason. However, you must do this before the round begins!
Do you allow mature content? Please keep all work PG-13 or below unless the round permits otherwise. In general, if it's allowed on DeviantART, it is allowed here, but I do not recommend pushing the limits. Artistic nudity and homosexual content are fine, but, pictures with possibly questionable content should be marked as such.
Where can I post the sketch I did? What if I don't want someone to post what they drew for me?Since it's your drawing, you can post it anywhere, but try linking back to the artist you drew it for (not QuickXChange itself!). If you don't want the drawing someone did for you posted, you should tell them yourself.
How do I hand in my gift? How does QuickXChange know I've completed my work? Please send
both the person you are gifting
and the QuickXChange account a
link to your completed piece, either via Note or on the
Round 1 journal. If you would rather your gift be kept private, please mention that in the note.
JoiningHow do I get into QuickXChange? The quick answer is - you don't. Someone already in QuickXChange must PM the QuickXChange account with a recommendation. Your name will then appear on an admissions list on the next round. Three current members must comment and vouch for you, and you will be invited during the next round.
What are the grounds for suggesting someone?Although there is a level of quality that should be maintained, the more important part is that invitees are able to do the work. Before suggesting someone - think of this, would I want to receive art from this person? Does this person enjoy drawing for others? Can they meet deadlines? Remember, membership is far more about community than just pretty pictures.
LatesSomething came up, and I may not finish my piece on time, what do I do?As soon as possible, Note the QuickXChange account with why you cannot finish and give an approximate date when you will. If your reason is valid, you will then be put on extended grace period until the date you proposed (no signing up for more rounds until you hand in that one). If your reason is deemed invalid, you will receive the normal grace period once the round is over. Please judge your own workload carefully! While I sudden injury is a valid excuse, saying you're being overloaded at school or work won't fly more than a few times. Since participation is not mandatory, you should be able to gauge if you shouldn't have signed up in the first place.
What happens if I don't submit my piece on time and I don't tell you why?If you miss the initial, official deadline, you have a grace period of two weeks (the next round) to complete it. However, you may will not be allowed to participate in any rounds during your grace period. If you have any sign-ups, you will be remove for them.
What if I miss the grace period?Someone else has to pick up the work for you. Four weeks should be enough time to have drawn something. You are then banned and can no longer participate in future exchanges.
What are pick-ups?If someone is banned, we will ask for people to volunteer on a first-come, first-serve basis to draw for the person who did not get their work. Pick-ups have a similar time frame as regular rounds - two weeks and then another two-week grace period with no sign-ups. As expected, not finishing a pickup will lead to a ban.
How do I get un-banned?You must finish the drawing you owed, whether or not someone picked it up, and and you must go through the suggestion process again. Also, you may not re-join withing five rounds of being banned.
MiscellaneousWho runs QuickXChange>fongmingyun .
Why QuickXChange?Because "quick exchange" is a perfect descriptor for the group, and because it becomes "quick change." The admin spent want too long thinking that up, but it was better than NASDAQ.
You're being elitist! If you would like to think so, maybe. Membership is friends'-invite-only to keep this place from becoming so large that exchanges are unmanageable. But more importantly, if people know each other - no matter what skill level they are - people are more likely to turn in their work, and keeping to deadline is important. This is an activity among friends and no statement of art quality.
